EASINGWOLD RUNNING CLUB

With temperatures hovering around 6ºC and a biting gusty wind to also contend with, the words “enjoyable”, “great”, “fantastic”, “pretty” and “would run it again”, don’t immediately spring to mind. Nevertheless, these were the general comments of the majority of the field who competed in the first Thornton-le-Clay/Foston 10K on 4th October (also Round 2 of the Club’s new championship season). A very well organised race planned by fellow Club members Richard and Tracey Harrison. The route took on the form of a figure of 8 on undulating terrain. Starting in the village of Thornton-le-Clay and climbing out onto the Sheriff Hutton and Flaxton roads, the route returned back through Thornton-le-Clay and headed down into Foston before returning along farm tracks to finish behind the village school. Vocal support from the villagers and spectators, coupled with a clear vista across the Vale of York with York Minster standing proud on the near horizon and views beyond, all contributed to the wonderful atmosphere of this event. The icing on the cake, as it were, was the refreshments served in the village hall afterwards – homemade sandwiches and cakes and tea and coffee served in china cups no less!

As an inaugural race, on a Saturday, it was difficult to judge how many runners would be competing, so it was a pleasant surprise that around 40 people entered the race on the day making a respectable field of 140 competitors. Twenty ERC members supported this local event and some excellent times were achieved despite the strong winds. First home was Mark Whiteman, taking 2nd place in the M40 category; Al Byrne ran his best time for months finishing 1st M45 and Anne Hartley achieved a PB with time of 48:17. Tricia Rees-Hughes and David Rogers, who have graduated from the beginners group, both finished in under the hour and also achieved PBs. Everyone who finished the race, received a unique Foston/Thornton-le-Clay hessian shopping bag (with chocolates as well) – very useful and in the era of reducing the usage of plastic bags, environmentally friendly.

The previous week was Round 1 of the Club Championship with another local race – the Sutton 7. A good representation again from ERC was evident with 16 members competing, and another successful event. Nigel Ramsden and Mark Whiteman finished 1st and 2nd in the M40 category; Sheila Capper 1st F40, Kim Phillips 3rd F45 and Harriet Reid 2nd F35 who collectively also won the ladies team event.

Round 3 of the Championship is the Pickering & Moors 10K due to be held on Sunday 26 October.

Last week’s training session was a bit of fun with the team mile relay event. Ten teams of 4 raced in this event which should have seen each team finishing more or less in the same time. The winning team finished around 20 seconds ahead and was led by Peter Johnson. Each member of his team – Sally Walker, Cliff Simm and Andrew Nelson-Lee, -was awarded a bottle of wine for their efforts.

This week’s training is a tri-discipline – hills, shuttles and intervals.

Terry Fox Run - Afghanistan

Canadians look at you aghast when you say ‘who’s Terry Fox’. It seems he was a cancer victim and amputee who decided to run the breadth of Canada on his one good leg and one artificial leg to raise awareness of the disease. I guess each nation has someone like Terry Fox and Jane Tomlinson springs to mind as the UK’s equivalent. Every year there are numerous Terry Fox runs throughout Canada, and anywhere that there are large numbers of Canadians; hence this morning’s run in Kandahar.

The whole point of the run is that it is non-competitive. There are no numbers, no finish times and no results. There was however a choice of 5k or 10k races, sorry runs. Obviously I wasn’t going to get out of bed at 0515 for a 5k so 10k it was. The Canadian physical training instructors treated us to a truly cringeworthy warm up routine, complete with Eye of The Tiger backing track. The great British reserve prevented me from getting too enthusiastic although it did make me recall a similarly embarrassing Mr Motivator at the start of the Great North Run many moons ago. My training partner Jem, a dentist from Leeming, got a much better start than me but the route (round the airfield to a halfway point and then double back, as always) was poorly marshaled and his group turned too early. So although he beat me (remember Gus, it is non-competitive) I was able to give him a hard time for cheating, and on a charity run of all things. Shameful.

That is now 3 races completed in eleven days: one 10k, one 10 miler and one half marathon. And boy-oh-boy is the scenery getting repetitive. Still, I have a couple of weeks’ leave starting on Monday so I shall be back in Yorkshire and hopefully out training with you all next Thursday evening. If I do not make it there then I have entered the Pickering 10. Having not seen a gradient of more than 1% or any mud for a long time I am not going to run with any great expectations, but it will be good to catch up with friends again.

Finally for the coaches and training gurus amongst you, ‘does 4 months without alcohol improve your running performance’? Buy me a beer at the Galtres Centre after training and I am prepared to discuss my findings with you. I am ready for it.

Music City Marathon

‘Where is Music City?’

‘Isn’t it Nashville, Tennessee?’

Oh the conversation’s just sparkling at 0515 in the morning as we line up on the start line.

It is another weekend and despite being a heck of a long way from Afghanistan the Music City Marathon is another excuse for a race at Kandahar airfield. Still, it’s another weekend and whilst the Music City Marathon, or to give it it’s correct title the Country Music Marathon and Half Marathon, was held in the United States last weekend that would have clashed with the Army Ten Miler so we are running a little late. I can only assume that the young US Army captain from the medivac team (helicopter borne medical evacuation; think MASH in a hot and dusty setting) who has organized this race lives somewhere in Tennessee. She has certainly done a good job. Everyone who pre-entered has a race pack with a number, pins and a t shirt and there is a choice of a 10k, a half marathon and a full marathon with plenty of water stations and medics. The only disappointment is that she doesn’t look like Hot Lips Hoolihan.

Who would want to run a full marathon round an airfield? It was certainly not my option, although a few hardy souls gave it a go. I stuck to the half. All three races started together and followed the same opening route (no, it’s not a ‘rawt’, as the Americans like to pronounce it). A third of the way round the airfield, in the opposite direction to last week’s race, and then retrace your steps. The 10k lightweights stop when they get back to where we started. The rest continue round the airfield for another full lap. And then the mad buggers on the full marathon repeat the whole thing again.

At the 10k drop out stage I could have stopped and had a top 10 finish. I was tempted. But, I pushed on with a Canadian guy stuck to my shoulder. Having upped the pace a little I dropped him at about the 7 mile mark (not that there are any mile markers so you have to guess) and felt pretty good about that. The problem being it left me completely on my own. I had lost sight of the runner ahead of me so motivating myself to push on became a bit of a challenge that I probably failed to live up to. A final finishing place of 5th seemed pretty respectable even if my time of 1 hour 32 was somewhat slower than I had hoped. The good news was that we had been sent the wrong way so had added at least a couple of minutes to the route and the whole measuring thing is pretty unreliable here anyway, so I am not too hung up about the time. The bad news was that the Canuk I dropped appeared a minute or two after me and started his second lap for the full marathon. Perhaps I hadn’t dropped him with my superior tactics, he’d just hung back to conserve a bit of energy. Hey ho.

Next up is the Canadian organized Terry Fox 5k and 10k on Thursday morning. Another early start and no breakfast. At some point we must put the running to one side and get on with fighting the Taliban.

Army 10 Miler

I notice from the latest Club newsletter that the nights are drawing in and that reflective gear, and no doubt long sleeves and Ron Hills are required. No chance here in the southern plains of Afghanistan of needing to wrap up warm. The temperature overnight has dropped to about 16 degrees but it remains in the high 30s during the day. Consequently today's big race, the Army 10 Miler, started at the unearthly hour of 0600 with registration at 0515. Seemingly the Army 10 Miler is the United States largest 10 mile race. Starting and finishing at the Pentagon it is open to all comers, but unfortunately for us an all expenses paid trip to washington to participate was out of the question.

The Afghanistan 'shadow race' attracted about 250 runners, which was a bit disappointing given that there are over 13000 people in Kandahar at the moment. The route was round the airfield's perimeter road as far as the Australian's compound and then turn and retrace your steps. As flat as a pancake the taxing parts of the run are the large broken stones that make up the roads and the never ending moon dust that coats everything, including your teeth and tongue as you inhale rapidly. That and the fact that massive Antanov 124 aircraft pass just above your head as you cross the approach to the runway at the two and a half and seven and a half mile points.

An hour and six minutes later and I am classified as the ninth placed finisher. The bonus of out and back races is that you start to feel better as you pass the slower runners who have yet to reach the half way point and you know that you are on the way back in. I know it is not in the Corinthian spirit of ERC but it made me feel good. Better news than a top ten finish (i had managed a seventh place in the US Marine Corps' 8k race two weeks ago) was that my training partners, who are a pair of military dentists, one from the RAF and one from the US Navy, managed to place third and sixth. With three in the top ten that made us the highest placed team so a place on the podium and a prize to boot. I am now the proud owner of a 101st Airborne cap with the legend 'We have an appointment with destiny' emblazoned on it. Hoooha, as our American cousins are want to say. Don't you just love em.

Next week is the Music City Marathon, Kandahar edition. There is a choice of a 10k, half or full marathon. Half marathon for me. The thought of over 3 hours round a dusty airfield is enough to test even the most patient of runners.

EASINGWOLD RUNNING CLUB

The final race of the York District Road Race League was held at Wistow near Selby on 3rd July. A flat course taking in the lanes around Wistow with views across to Selby Abbey, it is renowned for setting PBs and this year the 29 members that ran did not disappoint. Chris Hartley beat his PB of 20 years standing along with Sheila Capper, Kim Phillips, Karl Gerhardsen, Luke Shannon and Helen Dolding.

With the league completed and results collated, the only event left was the handicap race and presentation evening at Stillington on 17th July. Easingwold Running Club had plenty to celebrate walking away with 4 trophies for various successes; 2nd and 3rd places awarded to Nigel Ramsden and Mark Whiteman respectively in the Male Vet 40 category; 2nd to Hazel Wharton-Street in the Female Vet 55 class and 2nd to Easingwold A Team in the open team category. Also worthy of a mention is Sheila Capper and Kim Phillips, both missing out by only 1 point and 2 points respectively to finish 4th in their age categories. Of the first 10 places in the Male Vet 40 category no fewer than 6 of the competitors were from ERC. Well done to everyone who competed in any of the races.

The race at Selby also counted as Round 13 of the Club Championship and this has led to some changes in the top positions. Although Chris Hartley still leads, hot on his heels is Nigel Ramsden closely followed by Mark Whiteman. In fact, only 3 points separate all 3 of them! With 3 races remaining for the title a closely fought battle will ensue. Hazel Wharton-Street is 1st lady lying in 4th position overall. Not all members have yet completed 8 races, of which the best 8 scores count so the leaderboard could yet change quite dramatically.

Another league that some runners have been taking part in is the Black Sheep Series. Chris Richardson has been competing for the full pint and Cliff Simm the half pint. To complete the half pint, competitors must run 4 out of the 6 10km runs; likewise to qualify for the full pint with the addition of running the Ripon 10 mile and Burn Valley half marathon. Both Chris and Cliff are currently lying in second place in their own age categories, but with 2 remaining races there is chance for competitors to improve their positions.

Having enjoyed a series of training evenings ‘playing away’, the club will now return to its regular training evenings, meeting at the Galtres Centre on a Thursday at 7.00pm.

EASINGWOLD RUNNING CLUB
The last of the 10km series of races in the York District Road Race League was held on Tuesday 1 July at Wistow near Selby and was also round 12 of the Club Championship. The flattest of all the 5 races, this is usually a fast course. The temperature was much hotter than of late and a strong breeze was evident so not ideal conditions, especially as most of us are used to running in cool damp weather this season! Nevertheless 27 club members turned out and put in some good timings. The results have now been collated and the final placings can be revealed.
After a strong start in the series for Easingwold A in the open team category, ERC slipped down the rankings to finish in a respectable 3rd place. However, this year the ladies team put on a strong performance, finishing in 4th place separated only from 3rd position by a mere 4 points. Chris Hartley and Nigel Ramsden finished 1st and 2nd respectively in the M40 category and Kim Phillips an excellent 2nd in the ladies F45 section. In summary, another good result for the club and well done to everyone who ran and represented the club so well. The number of members turning out for each race in support of the club this year has been fantastic. All that remains to round off this year’s league, is for the annual handicap race at Stillington on Tuesday 15 July followed by the presentation of trophies and a pie and pea supper.
The Club’s Championship table has now also been updated to take into account the last 2 sets of results in the championship league. Chris Hartley has now taken the lead from Nigel Ramsden and is currently leading by just over 3 points. With only 4 more races left to contend the title first impressions would suggest a two horse race, but there is still scope for a 3rd contender to join the fight for the title with last year’s winner, Al Byrne still to record his 8 best times.
The jogging/walking/running group continues to be well supported by its members with a continuously good turnout each week. Enthusiasm is still strong among its members and the progress that they have made is incredible.
ERC’s regular training on a Thursday night continues with its summer programme and this week’s training is another away evening, this time organised by Nigel and Ken with a run along the River Ouse at York starting from Clifton Bridge to the Millennium Bridge and return. Post run discussions will take place at a suitable watering hole afterwards for those needing liquid refreshment.

EASINGWOLD RUNNING CLUB

The third race of the York and District Road Race League, hosted at Easingwold, was a great success with just short of 200 runners taking part, of which 29 were members of Easingwold Running Club. Described as one of the most scenic races in the League it is also a tough course due in part to the protracted climb up to Crayke Castle and the long haul along Daffy Lane. The weather this year was kind insofar as it was much cooler than last year’s baking temperature of 28ºC. Andy Hilton, from York Acorn, led from the start and finished in a fast time of 32:50, almost 40 seconds ahead of his team mate’s second place. Our own Nigel Ramsden finished first for Easingwold in 36:55. A PB was secured on home ground for both Martin Robinson and Mark Goff. Easingwold A is still holding its 2nd position in the Open Team Category behind York Acorn, with the B, C and D Teams remaining in the top 20.

Thanks to all who turned out to support the event and especially to those who helped marshal and officiate on the evening. It is this support that contributes to the evening’s success and enables us to host the event for which Easingwold Running Club is extremely grateful.
On Saturday 9 June, five Club members (Ken Dart, Paul Jacobs, Mark Whiteman, Nigel Ramsden, Chris Hartley) took part in the annual Swaledale Marathon. Not your typical 26 mile road marathon, but 23.2 miles and 2586 feet of ascent across Swaledale. Starting from Reeth, the course heads out towards Fremington Edge, Arkengarthdale, Gunnerside and returns to finish back in Reeth. A truly arduous race but also popular with all 450 places taken within days of the race opening for entries. This year was Ken Dart’s 19th time of competing at Swaledale! The weather was warm and competitors grateful for the drinks and food stations provided en-route to replenish energy levels and prevent dehydration. At the time of going to press no race positions and times have been confirmed but Chris Hartley and Mark Whiteman came in first for Easingwold in a time of 3hrs 46 mins followed by Nigel Ramsden, Paul Jacobs and Ken Dart with Easingwold finishing in 2nd place as a team..
This week’s training will be held at Newton on Ouse, meeting at the parish Church at 7.00 pm. There will be 2 routes on offer, kindly organized by Gus Wells. The next round of Road Race League is at Bishop Wilton and the infamous hill on Tuesday 19th June.

EASINGWOLD RUNNING CLUB

The second race of the York and District Road Race League was held at Tadcaster on Tuesday 22 May which also counted as Round 10 of the Club Championship. Another fantastic turnout for the club with 33 members competing in this event. A more undulating course than the previous race, with the cruel Windmill Hill rising sharply at 7km to catch out already tiring legs, but not enough to deter the competitors and yet again incredible results were achieved enabling the Club to maintain its 2nd place in the Open Team Category, with the B, C and D teams also in the top 20. The Ladies A team is currently is in 7th position in the Female category with the B team just 2 places behind.

For those foolhardy enough to rise to the challenge of completing two 10km races in 5 days, round 11 of the Club Championship took place on Sunday 27 May at Melmerby, which is one of the races in the Black Sheep Series and which some of the Club members are participating in. Described as undulating and the fastest course of the Black Sheep races, 8 members turned out in unseasonably cold and damp conditions to compete. Despite this, through grit and determination, fast times were achieved by everyone with Andy McIntyre and Jon and Sarah Dixon achieving PBs. Al Byrne came in first for the club in a time of 36.07 securing him 3rd place in the M40 category and a prize to boot. Well done also to Paul Skilbeck, Bernie Wood, Chris Richardson and Ken Dart.

All this has now meant a change in the leader board of the Club Championship with Chris Hartley taking the lead from Paul Jacobs and Al Byrne giving last year’s Champion Nigel Ramsden some serious competition.

Now that the (supposedly) fine weather is upon us, many of the Club’s runners are competing in races far and wide and have included the Windermere Marathon, BUPA Great Manchester Run, Beverley 10km, and Ripon 10 miles, to name but a few . Our eldest member, Cliff Simm, continues to inspire and amaze us all by competing in three 10 km races in 8 days and then travelling to Scotland for a week to complete a long distance walk! Remarkable.

It is Easingwold Running Club’s turn to host the Road Race League on Tuesday 5 June, so if you are driving in and around Easingwold you will become aware of up to 200 runners powering around the 10km course. The race starts in Claypenny Estate at 7.30 pm and works a clockwise track past Thornton Hill Lane, along Binsley Lane and then through Crayke, along Daffy Lane, down the Crayke Road before a fast finish along Uppleby, Spring Street, Tyler’s Walk and into the Memorial Park.

Please can you take great care if you are driving around the race route. There will be plenty of signs, lots of marshals and, literally, hundreds of runners. It would be very much appreciated if you could slow down a little, or pull over, and take notice of instructions from the officials.

It has been a very successful year so far for Easingwold Running Club and as mentioned above, we have been achieving fantastic results. A number of our runners will be expecting to finish in the top 50 and many will be hoping to break 40 minutes for the 10km (which is very fast!). Why not come along and support all the runners, particularly the locals – they do for the London Marathon! First runners will be powering along Uppleby and Spring Street at about 8.00pm, the first should finish at 8.04pm (ish) and the last will be coming over the line at about 8.30pm.

EASINGWOLD RUNNING CLUB

Round 8 of the Club Championship was held at Rothwell on Sunday 29 April. “The course is fast, with a net decent of 30 metres between start and finish” is the blurb on the organiser’s website describing this popular 10km course. Which in running terms means an ideal opportunity to try for a personal best (PB). The weather was good, not too hot, calm and fine so the conditions were ideal and, as ever, the 11 members of ERC who competed did not disappoint. First home for the Club and setting his own record was Mark Whiteman in 54th posn (out of a field of 726) with an excellent time of 35:46; the overall winner having completed the course in an incredible 30:08 for Holmfirth Harriers. Anne Hartley (48:54) and Bernie Wood (50:36) also bagged their own PBs. The other Club members, whilst not setting a new PB, were however very pleased with their fast times.

At this half way stage in the Club Championship, the current leader is Paul Jacobs, 14 points ahead of second placed Chris Hartley. With another 8 races to be completed for the Championship, the title is still open to challenge.

The York District Road Race League is now underway with the first out of 5 races being held at Pocklington on the evening of Tuesday 8 May which was also Round 9 of the Club Championship. An incredible 36 members represented ERC which accounts for almost 50% of the total membership with another 20 members registered to take part in at least one of the 5 races. It was a fantastic sight to see so many of the Club’s colours in evidence at this race equalling our presence with those from the larger York-based clubs. Following on from our success of last year, 6 of our runners finished in the first 22 positions followed by a constant stream of blue and green crossing the finishing line in very good times – yet more PBs were achieved for Kevin Lally, Jon Dixon, Andrew Throop and Sarah Dixon. All the effort on this hilly course in breezy conditions paid off as ERC has 4 placings in the top 5 for the M40 category and the ‘A team’ are currently lying 2nd in the open team class. Hazel Wharton-Street is also leading in her F55 category.

The second of the Road Race League races is on Tuesday 22 May at Tadcaster and this is also Round 10 of the Club Championship.

Well done to all those members who braved the wind and freezing conditions to complete Round 5 of the Club Championship. Some excellent performances were recorded but in particular the male team of Nigel Ramsden, Chris Hartley and Al Burn finished in a very creditable 2nd place.

Fantastic fifth for the Vets team. On their first outing to the Yorkshire Vets Championship, the ERC V40 team came home an amazing 5th overall. Well done to all those that participated.

This Thursday - A gentle jog round the snickleways of Easingwold.

New Year's resolution. Must have been plenty made regarding fitness as it was standing room only on the 4th Jan, our first evening of the new year. An amazing 38 members squeezed in to the Galtres, a record for any evening session, maybe for any ERC event.

Swaledale - don't foget to enter soon for the June event - it will be full very quickly.

Xmas Dinner - A good time was had by all! 39 attended the Xmas bash, held at the George Hotel in Easingwold for the first time. Thanks to the George for their hospitality and to Sarah for her silly Irish bingo. A big thank you to Helen and Hazel for the huge raffle they organised and those that donated prizes. If anybody is missing a string of jelly sweets in a packet and a black velcro running purse(empty), then see Gerard as he has ended up with them!
